The Sunday morning magazine show Something for the Weekend on BBC 2 in the UK has a regular gadget spot and this week the HEXBUG range featured prominently...

Tim Lovejoy said he "likes the look of these," and after seeing them in action commented "wow....that's cool."

I want one of those is absolutely amazing. I buy all my gifts from here. All the items here are really fun (amazing) and good quality. I have bought at least 10 hex bugs from here, they are amazing, brilliant, couldn't ask for more. All the kids liked it and amazingly so did I.

The blog may have been quiet but a lot of things have been happening in the world of the HexBug since the international Toy Fair in Nuremberg.

For a start, you can now order HexBug's online across Europe from the official website. They ship from the European distribution centre. You can also post reviews on the website.

One of the world's biggest toy fairs takes place in Nuremberg, Germany in February and what better place to launch the new HexBug Crabs and Inchworms than there?

Representatives from the manufacturer Innovation First, Inc. and the European distributor, IBL Parts, will be present along with over 80,000 trade visitors. Pictures and reports from the event will be posted on the blog.

The battery life of a HexBug isn't infinite......or it wasn't until now! With the clever use of rechargeable 1.5 volt batteries and a solar cell mounted to the HexBug's wings, Alpha has become unshackled from the restraints of normal batteries.

He will be happy to explore all day and night.....well all day at least! A big thank you to Graham Cooke from Southsea in Hampshire for the images. We will hopefully be updating the blog with a wiring diagram and video for those interested.

HexBugs on the BBC!!!!

The HexBugs have made their first TV appearance in the UK. After creeping into an episode of Knightrider in the US, they have been included as a prize on the fantastic childrens game show HotRods. Hosted by ex-Blue Peter presenter Zoe Salmon, it pits two teams against each other in a host of physical and mental challanges.

The players then choose 'hot rods' from the 'mighty orb' to try and gain prizes along the prizeline. One of the prizes featured are the 'HexBugs' which are on some of the shows - but also feature at the start of every show as the game in explained.

The HexBugs will also be featuring on a well known daytime TV show in the UK soon - keep checking back for information!

HexBug Update.......

Things have been a little quiet on the HexBug front for the last few weeks, but things will be changing soon! HexBug availability outside the US has been severley limited due to the high demand Stateside, but stock of the new improved HexBug will hopefully be arriving in the UK by the end of the month.

HexBug Crab and HexBug Inchworm dates are still to be confirmed, check back for updates!

The HexBug Crab has been released on the unsuspecting Japanese public to rave reviews. At least one though has managed to escape and was spotted trying to return to its natural habitat on the coast. It was last seen chatting up a hermit crab at dusk!

Here's a few more snippets of information about the HexBug Crab...

While the minirobot is geared toward kids, it's easy to see the Hexbug Crab gaining a place alongside office stress balls in cubicles across the country. Like other Hexbugs, the Hexbug Crab can be left to roam around and respond to its environment. Think of it as a little pet that doesn't need to be fed.

"Feelers" on the crabs legs are actually robotic sensors that help it avoid obstacles. It responds to loud clapping or banging sounds by running away. The Hexbug Crab, however, is slightly more advanced than Hexbug's robotic bugs. This one will also have light sensors and be programmed to scurry to the darkest spot it can find, just like a real crab does.

Educational Value of HEXBUGS

Not content with just being a 'fun toy' for kids both big and small (but not younger than 8!) the HEXBUGS are also a great educational tool. As an introduction into electronics and robotics they are fantastic. Other posts show how easily they can be taken apart and modified....take that into the classroom and it will get childrens interest. Check out this link here for more information.

"What can I do with a HEXBUG?" You may ask....what can't you do is pretty much the answer. One of the great things about the HEXBUG is the way it draws people in to the world of robotics and electronics. The design on the HEXBUG may be simple, but it's very effective and easier to modify.

Change the way the HEXBUG moves, make it sing a tune or give it a 'sleep' mode. These are just some of the ideas brought up on the 'HEXBUG Hack' website available here.
